Capture the enchanting spirit of ancient Greece with this handcrafted terracotta calyx-krater vase, created in Athens by Lambrou Bros.
Channeling the classical black-figure pottery traditions of 510 B.C., this vessel tells a vivid mythic story centered around Dionysus—the ancient god of wine, revelry, and theater—and his spirited satyr companions.
The front of the vessel displays a narrative framed beneath trailing grapevine tendrils heavy with clusters of grapes. A bearded figure of Dionysus stands in draped, patterned robes holding a ceremonial vessel, while a playful satyr plays a double-pipe (aulos) alongside a cloaked follower carrying a wineskin.
The reverse features a prominent, elegant palmette leaf motif with sweeping scrolls.
A classic Greek key (meander) border encircles the lower waist, while a delicate palmette band adorns the wide inner lip.
The vase has dramatic sculpted handles which are accentuated by bold, black-glazed upturned loop handles flared outward at the sides, giving the vessel its classic calyx-krater silhouette.
Height: 7.25 inches
Rim Diameter: 6.625 inches (6 5/8")
Base Diameter: 3.25 inches
Weight: 1 lb, 13 oz
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with crisp, clear black-figure graphics
Circa: 1970s
