This is a vintage Goebel–Merkelbach handmade stoneware mug, crafted in West Germany and finished in the classic salt‑glazed cobalt blue and warm brown tones that the pottery house is known for.
The mug features raised scrollwork, circular medallions, and stylized leaf motifs, all highlighted in deep cobalt blue against a brown‑to‑tan stoneware body.
The glaze has a glossy, almost glasslike sheen, with beautiful color transitions and crisp relief patterns.
The handle is thick, sculpted, and comfortable, with a curled lower flourish and a smooth grip.
The mug has a substantial feel at 1 lb 7 oz, and the proportions make it ideal for display or functional use.
Measurements
Height: 4.75"
Rim Diameter: 3.1875"
Base Diameter: 4"
Width (handle to rim): 5.5"
Weight: 1 lb 7 oz
Maker’s Marks Explained. The bottom markings include:
“Handarbeit” — German for “handmade”
“1380 K” — the model or form number
Merkelbach–Hrusch / W. Germany / Salzglasur — identifies the maker (Merkelbach), the region (West Germany), and the technique (salt‑glazed stoneware)
“Goebel” — indicates Goebel’s partnership/ownership during this production period
Together, these marks confirm it as an authentic handmade Goebel–Merkelbach salt‑glazed stoneware piece, produced in West Germany before reunification.
